That brown sweater from the back of the book « »

Lots of people are asking about that darn sweater in my author photo. I finished it last summer, and I have been partway through the pattern for months (almost a year) now. I intended to have it ready for download LAST fall…but it’s still not ready. Albatross, anyone?

I know where it is and I have my notes. So. I just need to get it in gear, find a few quiet hours, and finish it up. It’s going to be for sale on my site but I’m not sure exactly when.

As soon as things slow down a little bit and I can get it finished up.

Warning: Pregnancy talk to the end of the post…SKIP if you don’t care!

I totally jinxed myself when I told everyone that I have no morning sickness. Most days I wake up completely fine (although early) and can go through the whole day without even a little bit of nausea. But then days like today…I just want to get back in bed. But I can’t. ‘Cause I’m at WORK. Hugo’s usually pretty good to me…but today something has him all worked up.

I’ve been making smoothies every morning, with fruit, yogurt, and soy milk. That’s how I make sure I’m getting all Hugo’s vitamins for the day (plus I take a prenatal vitamin and omega-IIIs) then after work I get the juicer out and throw in arugula (”rocket” in Germany), tomatoes, carrots, etc. so that I get all THOSE. I’m not a breakfast eater, generally, so I know there’s no way I’d eat 2 bananas, a peach, half a carton of strawberries, a cup of yogurt, and a glass of soymilk all before lunch if it wasn’t a smoothie. And work is so tiring for both Nate and me lately that I’m prone to just throw in a pizza after work, take a shower, and go to bed. So…the grinding up of healthy foods so that they can be consumed quickly and effortlessly has been a really great thing.

Some foods are just too strong. I can’t eat mustard or salad that has Italian dressing or balsamic vinegar. Texture is a big deal…no bean burritos. Rice is good. Smoothies are good. Pizza, for some reason, is good. Spaghetti. But anything too flavorful or texturally weird is bad.

Today my smoothie has a peach in it that’s slightly less than ripe. So the smoothie is TART. And Hugo doesn’t like it.

I was talking to a guy at work whose wife is having a baby this week sometime. I asked him how her first trimester was and he said, “She hated me. She hated all foods that she used to like. She was very very angry.” So I’m a little better off that that, at least. I’m not angry at all, but I am really tired! Which probably does make me a *little* grumpy.

But man, yeah. I’m SO TIRED!!

    Hey Hey Stef!!!!!!

    CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know you are walking on air. I know I’m a terrible friend for not getting in touch sooner. You know Sabra, the kids and I live in ABQ now.

Let me have a real world address for you so we can communicate without me feeling like I should know how to knit.

    Love Love Love

Stick to the foods that work. They might change daily or weekly, but stick to them. I was horribly sick from week 6 to week 16 and I lost 5 pounds in a month. Just do what feels good and you’re lucky you can take your prenatals, I couldn’t for quite a while.
Glad to hear that the pattern for the sweater will be up sometime, whenever that is!

Morning sickness is the pits, no?

Everyone’s body is different, and it’s so hard to not say “try this - it’ll work wonders!” (just because something worked for me once or twice).

One this about pregnancy though? It teaches you a LOT about your own body.

And yes, pizza is almost always good. :)

Yay, congratulations!!! Sorry, don’t have any pregnancy tips to share, just congratulations :-)

I’m looking forward to the brown sweater pattern!

I think it’s so cute that you call your baby Hugo. Before I was born and my gender was known, my grandmother didn’t like calling me “it” so she used to call me Beauregard. My parents thought she was crazy, but I’ve always loved the story!

the first three months… i was the queen of NAPS… exhaustion like i never knew existed was w/me EVERY DAY… and that can make ya cranky.
nausea was not an issue for me (thankfully) but when i brush in the morning you’d think i was at the dental hygenists office and she was ripping my gums w/razors!

if it’s any consolation… i’m almost 5 months now & i’m nowhere NEAR as tired as i was

Sorry that you are feeling some morning sickness now. I had it bad! Try a few sips of beer even in the morning it always worked for me! I love seeing someone so happy to be pregnant! Hugo is a blessed baby!
Funny thing I was just going to your blog today to find the picture of the brown sweater. I have thought about it many times since I first saw it. It is very ironic that you addressed it today. I was actually writing a post mentioning the lovely collar.

Patterns, since you’re looking to get more out in the next year, is there anyone who can pull some of that info together for you? I know that I, for one, would definitely like experience (translation=would do it for free) since I’ve been so scared to do my own designs.

As for the pregnancy, I’ve got no advice other than to take care of yourself and go to your regular checkups. I like your approach to getting all your vitamins. Hugo is a lucky baby and you’ll both be healthier for it.

Congratulations! Take it easy, get a lot of rest.

I’m also looking forward to the sweater pattern. I love your designs. I’m knitting my first sweater ever right now. It’s the Textured Tunic from your Fitted Knits book. I’m praying that my gauge is good enough, so the arms won’t turn out looking like one’s 3/4 and one’s 3/8ths long. I just finished the back hem, and I’m loving it!

oh my god. my morning sickness was morning, noon, and night! my husband couldn’t cook at home anymore. anything remotely garlicky or oniony was just a mistake. i LIVED on smoothies (i added flax oil to mine for the omega 3s.) thank god that passed. now that she’s born and i’m breastfeeding, i’m the exact opposite. i’ll eat anything, anywhere, and DAMN! make a lot of it! I’M HUNGRY! :)

The pre-natal viatamins made me even sicker than I was, so I switched to Finstones - lol … they weren’t so bad! I also had to go off the iron supplements all together. Just remember, this to shall pass!

If you need a test knitter for the sweater, let me know :-)

    WARNING: Complete Baby-Oriented Comment

I decided to come out of lurking to say congratulations on your pregnancy! I discovered you and your knitting brilliance circa 2 years ago when I first learned to cast on, knit, and purl. Sadly, to date, I am still more an admirer of the magnificent pieces I view online and in magazines than an actual producer of finished knitted items (pathetic, right?). Anyway, I just want to give you words of encouragement. Despite your myomectomy, your body will do fine; it is hardwired, I believe, to do as it must. I say so because I had a myomectomy (more specifically, a laparoscopic abdominally-assisted myomectomy in August of 2005) and discovered I was pregnant on November 11, 2006. And despite the fears I had after learning that my procedure resulted in an almost complete transection of my uterus and bilateral uterine artery ligation, this little muffin, who will be called Samm, is thriving marvelously and actually a little larger than he need be (yippee!). I have to have amniocentesis to assess his lung functions previous to the Cesarean section at the end of June (06/25/07 to be exact), but these are nothing so long as our little guy is perfectly healthy. Please know, I, too, have NEVER been much of a baby person, BUT there is nothing like the joy I feel when I feel him squirming around inside and daydream of my spouse and I admiring the splendor of him. Oh, a big congratulations Stefanie! And welcome to the Mommy club. I now totally get those people who talk incessantly about their children; people who I used to just walk away from with rolling eyes.

    Be well!!!!

    shon’t

Nice that pizza is one of the “approved” foods! :) I’m really happy that you’ll be putting up your fabulous brown sweater at some point. I *loved* it when I saw it when the book arrived!

Congratulations! Hugo is a find name for a growing baby. Knitters can enjoy pregnancy more with the semi-instant gratification of knitting tiny baby things! Could a baby knit section of the Glampyre shop be on the horizon? The top-down raglan bunting!

Sounds like you are doing great. Growing a baby is hard work!!! I was really tired too and had the most ginormous appetite ever…even though I felt slightly nauseous all the time - I HAD TO EAT. Especially lots of carbs. Now I feel great though. Still tired sometimes, but unfortunately my appetite has shrunk….that’s probably better for my thighs at least.

Stefanie - I want to add my congratulations - I hadn’t commented before, but I wanted to let you know I’m excited for you. I’m 10 wks pregnant, too, and I’m going through a lot of the same things you are!

I’ll be looking forward to the sweater pattern - but take your time! no rush - you’ve got bigger and better things brewing!

I know it is a little bit late, but can I entice you with some Spincycle yarns for finishing the pattern as they are from my home town and I can walk right up to their booth at the farmers market! I Love that brown sweater!!!!
