Physical Therapy: Update « »

Ok, so I went to physical therapy today…and it was all diagnosis. No exercising, no massage!

Good thing I took it so easy last week that this week I feel good. Except that when she poked my back, I didn’t have the same level of pain to describe.

I go back on Friday to get to work for real.

It looks like I have a mild scoliosis! Isn’t that a weird thing to figure out when you’re 35?! She said my spine is definitely curved, and that my hips are rotated. From the front, the left one is higher and from the back it’s the right one..so it’s more that there’s some sort of rotation of the entire pelvis. AND one femur is longer than the other! So it might be that my back has curved to compensate for that, rather than it originating in the back.

I remember my parents noticed this thing with my hips in elementary school, but our GP didn’t think it was anything, so we all forgot about it.

I’ve never had any real issues with back pain until now, so it’s not anything to really worry about…just another weird medical thing that I’ve found out about myself in the last 1.5 years that I’m sharing with you.

She also said, “Did your mom get after you to stand up straight when you were a kid?” Apparently, there’s not ENOUGH curvature in my back now. The curve in my neck has straightened and the curve at my shoulder blades is too straight.

I know that on a daily basis this stuff never comes into my consciousness…it’s just weird to have this sort of assessment. Like a show dog.

So all this in combination with the hormones is causing this sciatica. I’ve got a wedge (5mm) to put under my butt on one side. I changed desk chairs from the cushy executive-looking one to a harder “person VISITING the executive” one.

We’ll see.

But yeah, I’m feeling better than last week!!

Glad to hear you are feeling better. Definitely weird to be evaluated like that–hopefully the wedge ( and future visits with actual therapy) will help keep the pain at bay in the long run. Take care.

I have almost exactly the same spine issues, except that I have two separate areas with scoliosis. I only learned about it a year ago, when I was 36. I’ve been seeing a chiropractor ever since, and the changes in my spine are incredible (he takes x-rays every four months, so I’ve been able to watch my spine move). I feel so much better. I never realized how many little pains I had before until they went away.

Glad to hear you’re doing better. Gotta get a really good chair so you can sit and knit for hours!!!

Part of the scoliosis thing, if they didn’t tell you this already, is your height. Being a fellow tall girl with scoliosis they said that for some reason tall women are more likely to have scoliosis. They don’t have a reason for it, so it is what it is. With your hips being so out of whack, you sciatica is much more susceptible to problems. Also, you might want to ask them about leg length. Due to the scoliosis and just genetics, there is a very good possibility of a leg length discrepancy.
Look at me, sounding like a doctor! I only know this stuff because I have it! Anyway, take care of yourself!!! ~MM

MM– She DID say that one of my legs looked longer than the other one…and that the curve might have started in compensation for that.

I’ll say it again…the body is a weird and wonderful thing…

Very weird coinsidence: I went for a new patient physical on Monday to a doctor known for being EXTREMELY thorough. She had a med student with her, and so, during the exam, she would address the student a lot and point things ot and have her try things. At any rate, she nonchalantly pointed out the slight scoliosis in my spine to the student! I am 31 and never heard that I had scoliosis before! Weird. Must be going around.

Hang in there! When I was carrying my youngest last summer I became familiar with sciatica–totally sucks. As if pregnany waddling isn’t enough siatica adds a hobble to that new giddyup. I’d look into a leachco pregnancy pillow–it really saved me!
