« Karida’s Saartje’s Booties!! Maternity top finished »
I’ve been looking around at maternity clothes, and I have to say…I’m having a hard time finding anything. Jeans or otherwise.
The problems are:
1) The butt of maternity jeans is really distressing. The pockets are way too small, or they somehow really have a funny cut that flattens and enlarges.
2) They’re all to short.
3) The washes are ridiculous or they’re bedazzled.
I finally found a couple of pairs at Ross for like $15, they fit passably well, they’re long enough, they’re straight leg…but they washes are hideous. SO one task for tonight is to dye them indigo. (WML)
I started working on a maternity jacket/sweater. It’s going to be something I can wear now, and that will grow with my belly so that I can wear it later, too.

I’m so with you. I’m gearing up for my second go at mat. wear and I wore out the one or two pairs of jeans that I managed to find last time. What is with the washes and fancy pockets? It’s like they think this is our last chance to dress like a teenager and we’d better make the most out of it. It’s all either formal business wear or jr. miss stuff. Where’s the in-between?
Yoga pants. It’s the only way.
when I was preggers I used a hair elastic (rubber band) hooked through the buttonhole to extend the waist on my regular jeans. When they got too small I switched to stretechy black yoga pants. Good luck with jeans- it’s hard enough to find good fitting jeans when I’m not pregnant!!!
I have been looking every where for a pattern for a maternity sweater. They definately do not exist. And unfortunately I dont have your talent to create my own, so I cant wait to see what yours looks like.
my best advice on maternity jeans… go on ebay & find/bid on habitual jeans the under belly “ease please” jeans… i would NEVER spend $200 on a pair of maternity jeans, but after trying EVERY brand on… those are the ones i always wind up wearing out (i paid about $50 on ebay) and they’re worth it
the citizen & seven jeans w/the belly panel are comfy, BUT if you’re wearing a stretchy top.. you wind up getting sausage link belly going on… but AGAIN… EBAY them, because it’s ridiculous to spend $100 plus on jeans MATERNITY jeans no less…
the gap maternity jeans were comfy too and they had some nice washes
;)
check out old navy and the gap for maternity clothes. they’re cheap and easy.. not always flattering but good for everyday wear. i was really put off by how big the butt was in most maternity pants until i was around 7.5/8 months and then i was happy to have them! it’s amazing how big you don’t think that you will actually get
That jacket is looking really cute. Can’t wait to see it when it’s done.
Try Target for jeans — maternity clothes really aren’t going to be that attractive no matter what, but the ones from Target seem to fit better than the ones from anywhere else. They’re usually too long for me, but since you’re tall then that shouldn’t be an issue!
I understand the distress . . . when a friend told me that my maternity jeans gave me “mom butt,” it made me want to boycott all maternity clothes.
This time last year I found a great wide leg maternity jean & I invested in maternity citizens-those were only comfy so long though but at least I felt cool. In the third trimester I rocked leggings and tunics. I really never thought I would wear leggings again but boy was I happy they were back in style in that third trimester. Jersy saved my life the entire time. Really its a great time to be preggers so much of normal clothes work you really only need to buy maternity for pants and jeans. good luck
The bad news on maternity clothes is that a lot of it is yucky stuff. (Too much daisy ‘n rick-rack for my taste.) The good news is that by the time your baby arrives, you will be so sick of your maternity clothes that you will gladly burn them in the backyard.
I always have problems with pants being too short too. I found that the Gap and Old Navy maternity pants weren’t too bad. The only problem is that you have to order them and hope for the best.
wow! i knitted orangina a couple years ago and have been looking at fitting knits and then just (re)found your site. what a small world - i went to NMSU and my mom lives in LC. i had to kind of laugh because shopping in LC is kind of sorry sometimes… anyway, congratulations and i look forward to working on fitting knits!
Isn’t finding nice, comfortable maternity clothes a pain? With every one of my boys I moved into yoga pants a bit earlier in the pregnancy… Can’t wait to see your top; I always wanted to knit one for myself, but I’ve yet to do an adult sweater…
I feel your pain. I’ve bought very few ‘actual’ maternity clothes. I did buy some maternity shorts and a denim skirt from old navy and a swimsuit from motherhood maternity (i love it!), but other than that I’ve been able to wear normal clothes that have a LOT of give. Luckily baggy tunics are all the rage in Tokyo and combining them with leggings is super comfortable. Comfortable and simple jeans are hard to find and are pretty uncomfortable for me now anyway. I’ve also found some men’s shorts that are comfortable and maybe just buying a size up from what you normally wear and using the belly band for jeans might be an option!! Can’t wait to see your maternity jacket pattern!!
I live in New York it’s pretty easy to find great maternity clothes here, luckily. I mostlly shopped at H&M’s maternity section or a store called Motherhood, try those, good luck.
I, I’m 15 weeks pregnant and i’m facing the same thing as you are. I was wondering if the shirt you’re knitting is your personnal design or someone else. I’m searching for one I can knit but with a gauge that is big enough so that it won’t take me the whole pregnacy to finish. By the way, it look great already.

Hear hear! Maternity shopping is miserable- the best thing I have found is American Apparel- especially the “high waisted skirt” a few sizes bigger then pre-pregnancy size… I’m 5 months now and trying to imagine what 8/9 months is going to look like…
Thanks for all the suggestions!!
Pretty much the only In Person stores in my whole town with maternity clothes are: Target, Wal-Mart, Ross Dress for Less, and K-Mart. There’s a mall, and there’s a store called Melrose in it that has maternity clothes, but they’re pretty much flowered polyester.
SO…I’m doing my share of eBay, shopping online, and trying to decide whether I can really teach a college course while wearing stretch pants. I guess I’ll just have to wait and see how big I really do get and just buy stuff when I need it.
One big problem is that pre-pregnancy, I’m a 12-14, so there’s no “going up a size.”
I’ve never been pregnant (its a long loooong way off as I’m still in college) But I am 6′ tall, I noticed that gap.com offers maternity jeans in classic cuts and washes in long sizes (34″-35″ inseam) They’re long sizes are usually the perfect length for me at 6′. Happy hunting!
P.S. Fitted knits is amazing… I’ve hoarded the yarn to make about 5 of your sweaters. Thank you so much!
For some reason I couldn’t leave a comment on your site yesterday so this is a little late. I wanted to let you know that Gap.com has a pretty decent maternity section. You can order your pants in different lengths too — which was a blessing for me since I’m short. Their maternity pants come in ankle, regular and tall lengths. They also have a pretty good return policy. You can take stuff back to the store even if you ordered it online. I lived out — and still wear! — my Gap maternity pants.
American Apparel- the best part is that its so stretchy you can wear it early and still as you are growing- I have been LIVING in the ‘high waisted skirt’ since about week 10, and now at week 21 I’m really showing and its still the most comfortable thing I can find. Also Gap and Old Navy Maternity is pretty comfortable, the sales are really cheap and most importantly I find its true to my pre-pregnancy size but for us tall girls the Old Navy is TOO SHORT (boo hiss) in the pants.
I live in canada and in here we have a store name THYME that only sale maternity clothes. I don’t know if you have that in USA but you can check the website. It’s not cheap but it looks good and it fits well
Look at babylooksgoodonyou.com for some great maternity t-shirts. Great quality and reasonable prices.
