16-week midwife visit update / sewing « »

baby sewing

I did some sewing yesterday. The baby’s due January 18. Even though it doesn’t get really cold here in southern NM, it might be 30-40 degrees outside at that time. So I think we’ll need at least some winter stuff, but by mid-March it’s getting into spring again already so I don’t want to buy a whole ton.

ETA: All of the stuff above except diaper covers are from McCall’s pattern #M4236

I bought some brightly-colored polar fleece and made a sleeveless blanket sleeper and a pajama. I also made some fleece diaper covers and a couple pair of pull-on pants a few weeks ago. My zipper-inserting skills are really sad. I can’t help but try, though. I’ll probably use the rest of the fleece to line the moses basket and maybe make a blanket. I’m also trying my hand at cloth diaper sewing. I found a couple of patterns online. I love making stuff. I haven’t had the sewing machine out in a LONG time.

I went in for a checkup on Friday and everything went really well.

I talked to her about what the birth will be like, and a few other things that had seemed really abstract. She assured me that I’ll get to have the baby in my hospital room, and that Nate can be present in the birth. I’ll get to nurse as soon as possible, and it really sounds like they already do everything I was hoping for.

We used the doppler to eavesdrop on what the baby’s up to in there. The midwife was really laughing at how much movement there was…apparently our baby is unusually acrobatic. We hard its blood flowing, but no heartbeat. She said SHE caught a glimpse of heartbeat, but then couldn’t focus on it so that my untrained ears could hear it. (Maybe because the baby was too busy.)

I had blood drawn for the maternal serum screening and signed up for the level-II ultrasound, which will either be in 2 or 4 weeks, depending on their schedule. I’m really looking forward to seeing the baby again and knowing what’s going on! We’ll also find out if it’s a girl or a boy.

Any guesses??

At first I was super-convinced it was a boy. But my dreams lately have been about a girl. I’ve been having dreams about being in weird situations and having to figure out what to do. I’ve been at school in class and had to change the baby, or in a situation where I’ve had to rescue someone else’s baby. But sometimes I’m just walking around holding hands with a child looking at stuff, or just changing diapers or cuddling.

Here’s a baby hoodie that Mom knit out of Noro Lily:

She even made the buttons.

Very cool and mod baby items! I love seeing how excited you are about the little one. I wish I could have more babies. It’s the best time of your life! Where do you buy yarn in NM. My mother in law lives in Santa Fe and she has had a hard time finding an interesting shop.
She has great taste. Are you still going to write the pattern for that wonderful sweater you are wearing on the author’s page?
I’m being longing for such a sweater. Stay healthy and happy!

I LOVE these pieces. What patterns did you use? I would love to make these for my baby boy due in September.

Oops, I tried to submit a comment and it didn’t register. Just wanted to compliment the great baby pieces. Beautiful! What pattern did you use? My baby is due in September and I’m trying some knitting, and crochet (Oh My!)
Congrats on the good midwife visit. Each time I go to my OB it’s such a huge relief. Oh and if you choose to do childbirth classes with your partner they can be fun. We just started ours and had a blast. Good luck!

The buttons are perfect, the baby clothes are adorable, and I’m going to second gleek: Jan. 18 is my birthday, so I vote girl. :)

Oh..a January baby!!!! Hmm, I’m thinking it’s a girl? I’m glad to see you and the little one are healthy and doing well. The baby jumper is too cute, I loved the patterned fleece. I’ve been making baby stuff for a “future” niece. They are such fun to make and let’s face it, alot of the baby stuff in stores is boring.

Since you’re a knitter, obviously, and you plan on cloth diapering, remember you can make fitted diapers with no waterproofing layer, and knit longies and shorties and such! :)

Handspun, handknit and Noro? Spoiled baby! (As well s/he should be!)

OH MY GOD THOSE ARE ADORABLE!

Y’know, it never occured to me that you could SEW baby stuff. That fabric rocks!

Also, did your mom make up the pattern for the hoodie or is it out there somewhere? All that stockinette looks like good knitting for when the baby is born and I’ll be too frazzled to focus on anything with too complicated of a stitch pattern.

my babies due in november… so cozy clothes for us also! my friend suggested that ALL she dressed her lil girl (jan baby) was long sleeved tees because the belly button was so sore AND you could lift the tee so as not to disturb the b button…

Gina…NM has good yarn stores! I live in a pretty small town, and we have a great one. Santa Fe is smaller than Las Cruces, but artsier…there must be something!

I think it’s really interesting that everyone thinks the baby’s a girl…so do my parents, my sister, and my SIL…I’m the only one who thinks boy.

    We’ll know soon enough!!

The hoodie pattern (I THINK) is from one of the Zoe Mellor books…but even after looking on amazon, i can’t pick it out of the list. I’ll ask her.

Thanks for the jeans link!! I’m starting to feel like I’ve got some options in the closet now, finally.

Those are so great. I am glad your visit went well. I think you are having a girl just based off things and your face has changed…I know sounds weird but mine did with my daughter and everyone told us it was a girl but I didnt believe until we had our leve II and is was a girl. The level II is great as you can really see a lot more.

    Hope all goes well
