« Yarn pics Petal pattern is now available. »
OK, I’ve got a Christmas present to knit, and knit FAST, since we’ve got Thanksgivingmas in about a month.
I want to make a hat / scarf set for an 18-yr-old college guy. Who is into sports. Who would not like “funky”.
Last time I made him the Marsan Watchcap…and he’s been wearing it for at least 3 years.
Are there any new coolguy hat patterns I should be aware of? How about “guy scarves?” Something textural, but not color-heavy.
Thanks!

Find out his favorite team. 2×2 ribbed hat in the team’s colors, chunky weight yarn. 2×2 ribbed scarf in one color with contrasting stripes at both ends.
I’d say brooklyntweed’s Koolhaas hat that’s in the latest IK Holiday Gift issue. If you check out his blog or Cathi (In the Pink), you’ll see a completed hat. No colorwork, but the texture is really cool.
Try this pattern I got from Roxyyarns.com. It is called the Easy Ribbed Merino Hat. I made one for my guy friend and he loves it. It is super quick to knit up. It only took me a day to make it. Hope the pattern works for you.
I have made the Seaman’s cap for every man in my life and they seem to LOVE it. It was a free pattern online.
I made my brother a scarf last year out of black bulky alpaca in a mistake rib pattern. He’s really fussy so I usually don’t knit for him. It’s soft and the pattern is just interesting enough to not be boring, but not so interesting that people will stare at it. Yeah. Boys.
I’ve made a few of this pattern for a few of my guy friends and they love them. It’s called the London Beanie and can be found at http://www.queerjoe.com/patterns/London_Beanie.htm
It goes really fast and is super easy.
Good luck!
I’ve used the following pattern when knitting for a few of my guy family members and they loved it. You can find it at:

It was super easy and went very fast; I got mine done in a day.
Good Luck!
this one would be nice:

or this one:
http://teleknitter.blogspot.com/2006/01/manly-cable.html
they are textural and nice w/o being too froo-froo or bust. I’d think you could use the cable pattern from the scarf in the hat somehow, too-or just make a basic hat int he same yarn
Check out brooklyntweeds projects on ravelry. He makes quite a few hats and scarves. Not all of the patterns are his, but they’re all modeled. His photography makes everything look cool.
I love that Petal sweater, btw!
…what about “Topi” from Knitty.com?
I made it several times and all receiver LOVE it
easy, fast knit.
greetings, eva
I can’t read this without suggesting my jughead hat or if you think he would dig it, the Mohawk hat in his team’s colors!
Jughead is mindless knitting (one size but looks best on med and lg heads), mohawk is pretty durned hard.
Please forgive this shameless self promotion! I meant to send you a copy of my book, but I canNOT remember if I ever did. If I didn’t, just e-mail me your address and I’ll make it so.
Love,
domiKNITrix!
this is one of my faves…scarf pattern that is
http://grumperina.com/knitblog/shiftingsands.htm
you can’t go wrong.
and bktweed’s hat pats are very cool.
I like the hat pattern in the INterweave knits Chrismas 2007…Koolhaas Hat.
Can you tell me what the lace pattern is that you are using for the lace scarf below adn how much yarn you used…it was a lace weight right?
Thanks
nope…can’t talk too much about the lace yet, it’ll be a pattern soon.
I have to agree with the Koolhaas hat! I’ve been dying to make that one myself.
Hi Stefanie,
I have been a long time admirer of your designs (your pattern for the “boob holder” inspired me years ago and was my first sweater!)
When I saw the lace scarf you posted a few months ago, my jaw dropped. Is that pattern avalable? It immediately reminded me of the scarf Scarlett Johansen’s character made in
“Lost in Translation”, a pattern I have wanted to make happen ever since. I would buy that pattern in a heartbeat.
Best of luck with your new baby and thank you for the wonderful work that you do!
;) Cole
