Testing out border fabric colors

Aside: When we lived in Germany, there was a Czech guy who was totally fluent in English, but had just learned the word “weird.” And he found the pronunciation really WWWWWWWWWWWWWEEEEEEEEEEEEIRRRRRRRRRD. So, whenever I think / say ‘weird’…it’s like, “weeeeeeeirrrrrrrrrd.”

Yeah. And today was weeeirrrd. It was just not my usual day. My friend Robyn (Crochet by Faye) did a blog post one day with her daily time line, and suggested that I do that, too. But I’m boring, so I never did do it.

My normal day would be like this:

8:45: wake up
9:00: Make coffee, get us dressed, eat
9:30: Go over to Mom and Dad’s
10:00 - 12:00: work / play
12:00: lunch while working
12:00 - 5:00: work / play
5:00: go home

Today was weird in that I had absolutely no schedule. We stayed home because my car is in the shop. So we got periodic updates all day with things they were doing and checking and it was really stressful. It’s an older car and is to the point that we have to go, “well, is this going to cost more than the car’s worth?” UGH.

I also had a really fun phonecall from Julie. She’s writing a book about how the computer age has changed the face of the knitting world, and is featuring patterns from a few bloggers. I’m one. It was a great conversation, and I’m really happy to be part of the project.

So, even though I had the whole day today to work or do whatever…the only thing I accomplished was to neaten the house in the morning, hang out some laundry, talk to Julie, and talk to the mechanic a bunch of times. And I feel TIRED.

I finished my tumbling blocks last night, and started in on that Chinese Coins quilt. The basis of the quilt is that you randomly choose the order of the fabrics in the strips, and then randomly choose the way that the strips are sewn together. I suck at random. I really had a hard time with this.

You cut up a bunch of pieces and choose them out of a bag, and that's the order they're supposed to be added, but what if two of the same fabric come up after one another? (I put the 2nd one back!) I also rearranged my sections so that they weren't repeats of each other. I totally cheated. I just couldn't do it. I had to exert SOME control over the arrangement. And. I'm so weeeeirrrrd...I stayed up until 3:00 am putting these strips together! I just couldn't stop once I got started, I had to see how my pretty fabrics would all look together!

Quilting is so expensive, it's supposed to take months to do a quilt...I've got to pace myself better. I've got 2 quilt tops finished and one almost finished. But, you know. The actual quilting is going to slow me down some. I've got one more set of fabrics for one more top...and then I have to actually put the batting and backs on all of them. Some (most?) people might sew a top, quilt it, sew another top...so that they'd have actual whole finished objects. I'm just stacking up the tops with no complete quilts to my name! I'm telling myself that piecing will give me practice with my machine, and that by the time I'm ready to quilt, I'll be pro at sewing. We'll see, I guess.

Knit or quilt? Knit or quilt? Knit or quilt?

The more I work on this quilt, the more I’m sure that the pattern is called Chinese Coins because it resembles the I Ching. (Random orientation of coins thrown onto the table in hopes of divining one’s best path / course of action.)

It’s interesting the things you learn about yourself through these little creative endeavors. Even something as benign as making a quilt!

Quilting is expensive and every bit as addictive as knitting. I decided to try it out last year and went on a serious quilting jag for ~6 months. I finished 2 baby quilts and one throw quilt. BUT I have 5 finished quilt tops (one is queen-sized) and I have serious UFO guilt about these because they cost SO much. I’m due to have my own baby in 5 wks and can’t muster up any energy to finish the little quilt I started for him.

Also, “random” troubles me as well. It takes hours for me to assemble a random order that I am happy with, and I think it defeats the whole purpose of it being random. I don’t think quilts happen without some consideration as to where the pieces will go because who is going to spend the time piecing a quilt and not put thought into where each piece will look best? I think your coins look great, whether they are truly “random” or not :)

Don’t worry about it. Quilters have UFO’s just like knitters. I would be thoughtfully random just like you did. Remember, this is supposed to make you happy so have fun your way with it.
